Modell's (full name "Modell's Sporting Goods") is a sporting goods
retailer with various locations in the Northeast United States.
Modell's offers a large collection of products from top name brands
in the sporting goods and apparel business. The chain was started by
Morris A. Modell in 1889 in New York City, making it the second
oldest sporting goods store in North America (before Milwaukee's
Burghardt Sporting Goods .

Through the years it has remained a
family owned business passing through four generations of the Modell
family. While best known for being a sporting goods retailer,
Modell's also operated a chain of "full-line" discount retailers in
the New York-metro area known as "Modell's Shopper's World" (and for
a short time as "White-Modells" until the name was reverted back to
"Modell's Shoppers World) from the early 1960's up until 1989 when
the company decided to focus on its sporting goods operations partly
due to increased competition in the discount retailer market.

The first store was located on Cortlandt Street in lower Manhattan.
Currently Modell's operates 132 stores mainly in New York, New
Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. In recent years however, it has
begun to expand to Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia as
well as Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.
Their flagship store is located in the middle of New York City's
Times Square.

Modell's approach as "Your Hometown Sporting Goods Store" through
local specialized offerings, community relationships and programs
such as Team Weeks, which assists local schools, leagues, and non
profits, has made it a very successful company through the years.
Modell's is also the sponsor of many east coast sports teams
including the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, New Jersey Devils, New
York Rangers, New York Jets, New York Giants, New York Islanders,
Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Flyers,
Philadelphia Phantoms, New York Yankees, Washington Nationals, and
the New England Patriots.
